When redecorating a whole room, little touches, like accessories, fabrics and original features can really pull a room together. However, to ensure a polished look which ties in perfectly, don’t neglect your flooring.  This simple and seemingly functional item can completely alter the feel of room and has the potential to make or break your decor. Just use this simple guide for choosing flooring to suit your room.

Cool and Contemporary

The easiest way to achieve a modern look is to invest in some classic wooden flooring. You can either choose neutral shades with light colored timber or go for a contrast with darker shades such as stained walnut. If you’re not ready for a total overhaul, the only other thing you’ll have to do to achieve this look is make sure your room is free of clutter. Alternatively add built-in storage and choose futuristic materials such as glass and Perspex to complete your look.

Country Manor

Nothing says ‘rustic’ quite like wood flooring. Choose natural looking boards to give your space that homey feel. Natural imperfections, like knots and cracks, only add to this look. A wood burning stove or roaring open fire place will add buckets of character; however, if you don’t actually live in an 18th century barn conversion, throws and cushions in traditional fabrics will do the trick.

Light and Airy

This look gives the effect of a fresh breeze constantly flowing through your living space. The secret is not to make your room feel cold; instead, think of the seaside on a summer’s day. To achieve this choose a wood floor in a light but warm shade such as natural oak. Team with furniture in complementary tones to carry the theme through your room. Add some extra soft white throws and blankets to make the space feel light but cosy.

Family Friendly

For homes where the living room doubles up as a playroom, design can often go out of the window. Carpets are a definite no no, but hardwood floors can prove painful for little ones learning to walk. A solid floor is great for spills and a warm shade will help your space feel homey. A fluffy rug can be real savior for a family living room; not only is it super stylish, but it will protect little knees from bruises and can be washed in a washing machine!

Eclectic

With an ‘anything goes’ look it’s all about bringing together pieces that you love and finding a way for them to work in harmony within your space. There’s a fine line between this working perfectly and just looking a shambles. They key is how you tie your pieces in with the rest of the room. You can use upholstery, fabrics and ornaments with clashing patterns as long there is one color-group or theme holding it all together. Your choice of flooring could be crucial to pulling this off. Try to pick out shades common to the majority of your furniture to tie it all together. If you’ve used earthy tones and textures a natural knotted board will work best. On the other hand, if your knick knacks have a retro feel, a cleaner finish or painted surface might be more appropriate.
